My Story
My parents took us on a cave tour to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. We walked a long way down into a huge cavern, and our guide explained that when he turned off the lights we would experience total darkness. After one minute he turned on a small light. Light filled the cave. People were happy.
I have thought of that experience many times. One life, One light, One overcomer.

Important passages that reveal our relationships
John 1:1-5 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
1 John 1:7 – “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.”
John 12:46 – “I have come into the world as a light so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path,”
Matthew 5:14-16 – Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Isaiah 9:2 – “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned,”
John 3:19-21 – Jesus says, “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
Ephesians 5:8-9 – “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”

Illustration # 2 – Five uses of the word “light”
Matthew 2:9 – “Behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.”
Exodus 24:17 – “Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.”
Revelation 21:23 – “The New Jerusalem is described as having no need for the sun or moon because the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb (Jesus) is its lamp.”
I Timothy 6:15-16 – “The King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light,”
Acts 9:6- 9 – Paul wrote, “As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’ Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me.
Illustration # 3 – Leaders in history that “shined” for the glory of God?
John Locke (1632–1704): The Light of The Word of God shaped his ideas about religious toleration, individual liberty, and self-government. His words were used by Thomas Jefferson to express true freedom.
John and Charles Wesley (1703–1791): They emphasized personal faith, spiritual experience, and social justice. The preaching and hymn writing by these brothers impact us today.
Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758): is best known for his role in the First Great Awakening, which swept through the American colonies in the 1730s and 1740s. His writings and preaching such as “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” reflect his understanding of human nature and the Grace of God.
John Newton (1725–1807): wrote the hymn “Amazing Grace.” He once had been a slave trader, but after his conversion to Christ he worked to do away with slavery.

Illustration # 5 – Satan, an Angel of Light, and his “enlightened” servants
2 Corinthians 11:13-15 – “For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.”
Satan’s darkness is exposed in God Word …
Liar: Satan is a deceiver who spreads falsehoods and leads people astray.
Deceiver: Misleads and tricks people.
Accuser: Brings charges against God’s people, as seen in Job and Revelation.
Tempter: Tempts individuals to sin, as seen in his temptation of Jesus in the wilderness.
Adversary: Opposition to God and His purposes, and antagonism toward believers.

Evil One: Malevolent nature which promotes evil and wickedness.
Father of Lies: The originator and perpetrator of falsehoods.
Roaring Lion: A predator seeking to devour unsuspecting victims.
